Jordan Murrell, high school student, wanted to make a difference in her community. Learn all about how she started Village Reads, and how she plans to promote literacy in Ontario and across Canada.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Jordan, and I am a grade nine student. I enjoy math, science, playing sports, especially volleyball, and of course reading!
Why did you want to start Village Reads?
As a child I always had access to books, and opportunities to read, but unfortunately this is not the reality for everyone. Which is why I was so excited to participate in this book drive.
Why is literacy important to you?
Reading skills are so important because you use them everywhere. Reading skills are the keys to learning, and literacy affects every part of your life.
How can others your age make a difference in their communities?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, you are never to young to make a difference. It can start out with just a small idea, and then grow into something bigger before you know it.
